Mammogram Screenings at Gainesville's All About Women

Grammy-winning singer Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2006 after a routine mammogram. She was successfully treated and has campaigned for women over 35 to have annual mammograms. If anything can be learned from her experience, it's that early detection is vital in the fight against breast cancer.

Performing monthly self-breast exams and getting regular mammograms are two of the most important things you can do to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages when the chances for successful treatment are the highest.

At All About Women, our board-certified physicians offer compassionate, high-quality care for women through every stage of life. Our promise is to make every woman's life better through services that cover the continuum of women's preventive health needs, including well-woman exams, breast care, and screenings (including mammography).

What is Mammography?

A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is a low-dose x-ray used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of women's breast disease. There are two types of mammography testing:

  • Screening Mammogram. Mammography can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them –playing a critical role in early detection of breast cancer.

  • Diagnostic Mammogram. Diagnostic mammography is used to evaluate a patient with a breast abnormality, such as a lump, found by her during a self-exam or her doctor. It is also used following an abnormal screening mammography to evaluate the specific area of concern.

Scheduling a mammogram

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women over the age of 40 receive an annual mammogram, but younger women with a family history of breast cancer may also need the screening.

Our physicians and staff at All About Women Obstetrics & Gynecology understand that when a breast lump or abnormality is discovered, it's a frightening experience. We are available to answer your questions and set an appointment for you as soon as possible.

Your health is our greatest concern, and since breast cancer often exists without symptoms, we urge you to schedule an annual well-woman visit for a breast exam and mammogram.

What Are Common Uses of the Mammogram?

Mammograms are used as a screening tool in two ways:

  • To detect early breast cancer without symptoms.

  • To detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as pain, nipple discharge, or a lump.
